What is a computer?

Computer is basically an automatic machine that accepts and processes data.In other words,it is a device,which stores, processes and retrieves information in a very short time.Moreover,it also succeeds in producing the desired result.More technically a computer is a high-speed electronic data processing machine. In fact , an automatic computer is a combination of several sections of equipment each performing a definite function.Lot of work by skilled people is needed before the data gets the shape and form acceptable to the computer.
There are a few very important terms used in the definition of computer.An elaboration of those terms may be useful in understanding it in a better and more useful manner.The term machine indicates that it is an inanimate device and it is built by people from a large number of a variety of parts. In computer language we call it hardware.The term process indicates the capability of the computer to work and transform the data. An automatic computer can do various tasks like substitution, alteration,insertion,rearrangement,movement,testing logical and arithmetic operations

It seems that no proof is necessary to put forward the point that computer and Internet have become part of the everyday life of even an ordinary human being.In this moderen world of scientific discoveries and communicative explosion,We are placed in a situation where we cannot but do without the computer.No doubt,the computer has become a household name today.There was a time when it was used by only highly qualified engineers and scientists.But gone are those days.Today it has become popular with business man,employees,students and researchers.It is an amazing fact that students have been introduced to this device even from the first standard.Now we wonder how our ancestors managed to carry forth the various duties without the help of this magic machine.
Today,even the school going students have started to become “ computer literrates” as it has been introduced as one of the subjects in the regular curriculum of studes.Unlike the progress of the various areas of scientific,technical and general interest,computer science,its recognition and appreciation has grown up in a very fast pace.In the seventies of the last century computer was a luxury that only the economically developed countries could afford to make use of.But , today even the underdeveloped countries are finding it difficult to live without this magic device. It is no loner a luxury.It has become a necessity which affordable to event he middle class families.
